It can be difficult to know when, or how to introduce Tack for the first time in training a young horse. Indeed, the very idea of adding tack can be so strong that it is not off for too long.
Fortunately, most horses accept tack with very few problems. The trick is to introduce them gradually so that the horse has time to get used to it.
The first thing is to make the bit. If your horse is used to wear a halter, but it is a little head-shy, you may find more easy to try a little free rein to all. While some people like sweet with a little bit of molasses, it's really a matter of preference personal.
Start with a little soft, like a jaw. Use some string to attach the bit to the other side of the rope, so it is at the horse's mouth. (You might need to attach the string to the top ring on the rope to make it fit properly.) Attach a second piece of string to the ring close to the jaw, so you can tie when you're ready.
Now, holding the horse on a lead line, drag the song into the horse's mouth, the bottom corner. Most horses will easily open the mouth for the bit. If it does not, paste your finger in the corner near his mouth, and it should open. Keep up the bit for a while, then drag again. Repeat several times, until he accepts the bit without any fuss. Then, attach the side closest to the bit on the rope so that it sits comfortably in the horse's mouth.
While the horse on the bit, spend some time grooming him. Try to take him for a walk. Do not apply pressure on the little, just let him chew on it and get used to the sensation.
Next time, add the bridle. Make sure it is properly adjusted before putting. Again, just let your horse get used to the bridle, grooming and taking him for a walk. You can put a halter over the bridle so you do not need to put pressure on the bit.
To add the saddle, start with a saddle blanket. Get your horse used to having placed on his back and moved around. When he is comfortable with the saddle cloth, you put the saddle on his back. Make sure the calipers and other elements that could flap around it are removed. Place it gently on his back, holding so it will not fall. Take it on and off a few occasions.
When you add the girth, start it with a hole in bulk. Very slowly tighten the strap so it fits properly. Do not move your horse with a saddle if it is not waterproof. It is much more frightening to have the slip saddle to have a strap tight.
It's a good idea to put the saddle on the scene the first time or two. That way if the horse away from you, he can not go too far. Once you have the saddle on tight, you can let him go so that he could have a race around the ring. Most horses will be some Buck time, or try to escape from the saddle. Keep it rolling, but if not let get used to the feel of the saddle. After some time he moved, realizing it does not fall, no matter what he does.
Finally, you can start asking your horse to work on the line along with its saddle and bridle on. Again, put the halter over the bridle and attach along the line so there is no pressure on the tool yet. Take your time and allow him to get used to everything before adding stirrups or other straps. If given the chance to become accustomed the saddle and bridle in a simple and non-confrontational, he must accept them easily in the long term.
