A bit of horse is in communication with the horse. To ask them to move their shoulders, look to one side either, asking them to back or back-up system (just a squeeze is not a "pull") to ask them stop. It should not be used to stop a horse and you certainly never pull on the bit and certainly never strong enough to induce horse hurt or discomfort.
