What are some good training exercises to introduce my dressage horse?
I have a 6yo gelding thoroughbred, and want to start do some training. I did some tests with him, but are there exercises to help both of us better understand the training?
What else that your horse has done so far? This can make a big difference when training them. Definitely get someone who knows horses training, including training. What they will probably do is start on the lunge line. If your horse does not know how to be on line, and an experienced trainer is a must. This may possibly be a very difficult thing for the horse to learn to do. Longe them (without reins side or a rider on top of them) is very important when teaching a dressage horse. This will help them to be balanced. You Want to start a big circle to get used to the line slot. To control your horse on the line you will need to teach them certain commands. There are several you need to teach them before you start with something more complicated. Voice commands "Your voice should start low and end one step higher for commands such as CAN-TER. them to trot, you should start in a higher ground and down like the T-ROT. and the encouraged to walk or stop, woah, saying in a low voice is the best. With practice, your horse must know when these signals and react accordingly. With voice commands, there are your orders and equipment. Walk forward to the horse must signal to them to stop. (slow down, but stop) Keep a whip slot in your hand to help with your transition upwards. (A trainer can help you in your position, and how to keep the slot and whipped, etc.) Having established commands, you can start with circles by starting a long line and slowly bringing them, and again. When you're not rushing, good exercises to do for you when you are driving in circles more (early large [eg. 20 or 30m.] and you head down to a smaller circle [10-15m], yielding right leg lines, giving it to respond quickly to your aid in making simple transitions (walk to trot, trot to walk, trot to canter, trot, gallop, etc.) Figure Eights, etc., if your horse is tight in his perch, try him still standing and flexion of the neck gently to the left and right until it relaxes. This should be a good start, I do not know how far you want to go, but a trainer can certainly help you grow. Recall, according to that you and your horse have in the past (separately and together) that you want to start with simple measures of basic and nothing is too difficult. Once your horse balanced and accustomed to your voice / AIDS LEG / transitions, more difficult exercises can be introduced. Good luck!
