You may have seen in a lounge, a lovely horse trotting around the ring sporting a fancy red ribbon in its tail. Of course, it is nice, but did you know it also has a meaning? Surprisingly, many riders do not.
The tradition began there many years. Riders would put a ribbon in the tail of his horse, when riding in the hunt to warn other drivers of things they might not have time to tell them before the trip. When there are many horses working in a group, it may be difficult to know which horse is which, and a ribbon when clearly there is something that must be taken into consideration before approaching.
Understanding the color of a ribbon
There are four colors of ribbon that you could see the tail of a horse: red green, blue and white. Each color has its own meaning.
Red ribbons signify that the horse is a kicker. This means that all other riders must ensure do not crowd the horse, especially from behind. This is the most common color of the tail tape and is therefore better understood. Often, people choose to use a red ribbon if a horse is green or inexperienced, because other runners are more likely to understand the meaning.

This is particularly important if you have a mare. It is unfair to ride a stallion to ride your mare too close to a standard in the ring, especially if it is in season.
